Work Permit in Tanzania
If you’re a non-Tanzanian who has recently secured employment or are looking to establish a business in Tanzania, obtaining a work permit is essential. The work permit is issued by the Government of Tanzania through the Ministry of Labor and Employment. At Mehta Integra International, we simplify the process by handling the complex and time-consuming tasks involved in securing a work permit. Our team ensures all required procedures are followed, preparing the necessary documents and submitting them to the relevant authorities on your behalf.
What is a Work Permit?
A work permit is an official document that authorizes a foreign national to work legally in Tanzania for a specified period. Issued by the Ministry of Labor and Employment, the work permit is a crucial requirement for any non-Tanzanian who wishes to work, start a business, or invest in Tanzania.
Who Qualifies for a Work Permit?
Any non-citizen seeking to start a business, invest, or take up employment in Tanzania is eligible for a work permit. With this permit, you can work legally and move freely within the country.
Who Can Apply for a Work Permit?
In Tanzania, a non-citizen cannot apply for a work permit independently. The application must be made by a locally incorporated company or a foreign company with a certificate of compliance and a permanent business presence in Tanzania or Zanzibar. The company submits the application on behalf of its employees or directors. Once issued, the work permit remains the property of the company.

How and When to Apply for a Work Permit?

The application can be made anytime after the employment contract is finalized, or, for self-employed individuals, after the business setup is complete and the relevant licenses are obtained.
Is a Work Permit in Tanzania Permanent?
A work permit is not permanently valid. Initially issued for two years, it can be renewed up to a maximum of five years for employees. For self-employed individuals (directors and shareholders), the permit remains valid as long as the business is operational in Tanzania. Additionally, those granted a work permit must apply separately for a Residence Permit through the Commissioner General of Immigration.
